Abstract

Court clerks perform a variety of tasks and have a wide scope of responsibility in the course of both civil and criminal court proceedings in Japan. They not only serve as an equivalent to the Recorder known in common law jurisdictions, but also organize the schedule of court proceedings, serve parties with summonses and even draft judgments and convictions. Therefore, court clerks are required to work closely with the presiding judges and have a profound knowledge of material and procedural law.
