Abstract
The article highlights the situation of the LGBT+ community in Japan from a legal perspective. The author identifies the main challenges regarding the rights of sexual and gender minorities. Furthermore, the author discusses the historical, political and social context and shows the change in public attitude towards a wider acceptance of LGBT+ issues, especially with regard to the legal protection of same-sex relationships. The author then devotes the remainder of the article to these relationships specifically by presenting the local systems of recognition of same-sex unions and explaining their legal bases, as well as their requirements and procedures.
