Abstract

Here  I  would  like  to  report  on  my  ten-month  stay  as an  exchange  student  at  Niigata  University  in  Japan.  Niigata  is  located  at  the  west coast  of  Japan  and  is  home  to  approximately 800 000 inhabitants. The university was founded in 1949 and comprises  a large number of faculties. The Faculty of Law of  Münster University and the Faculty  of Law of Niigata University have set up an exchange program allowing two students  from Münster each year to travel to Japan. The exchange students from Münster greatly  benefit from the extensive supported granted by Niigata University, which in particular  makes it much easier to prepare for the stay. An intensive language course is part of the  program as well as lectures given in English. The familiar atmosphere provides for an  ideal setting for discussions.

The participants of the program are staying in the international dorm. Several tutors  are ready to help with any difficulties which the exchange students might encounter.  The university organizes many trips, and a lot of different clubs offer the possibility  of varied leisure activities. During holidays there is ample time for travelling through  the country.
