Abstract
During the Muromachi era (1333-1568), the concept gained ground that in case of virulent conflicts between citizens both parties were to be punished by the authorities. Later on this rule ceased to be law, however, the concept stayed during the Edo era. Even today the concept seems to have survived in the legal consciousness of the Japanese people.
